Starting in November 2024, VMware has reintroduced its vSphere Enterprise+ licensing. This decision comes after VMware’s licensing was restructured after the Broadcom acquisition, which left many customers with fewer licensing options with a move to licensing bundles. Broadcom’s reintroduction of these tiers suggests a response to customer feedback, particularly from businesses needing flexibility to choose only the features they need. The return of Enterprise+ provides a like-for-like solution for those seeking to maintain their preferred feature set without upgrading to a higher-tier license with features they may not require. Read on for more information and how this impacts your virtualization technology decisions.
Before this reintroduction, vSphere Enterprise+ was an option that many customers had relied on for advanced features in compute virtualization such as DRS, Distributed Virtual Switches or Configuration Profiles. However, with the changes following the Broadcom acquisition, this option was removed, forcing some users to transition to the vSphere vCloud Foundation bundle, VMwares flagship offering, which offered a broader set of features- but at a higher cost. The reintroduction of vSphere Enterprise+ licensing allows those customers to return to their current licensing level and potentially more cost-effective model without compromising on essential capabilities.
The reintroduction of these licenses offers more flexibility to VMware customers, allowing them to choose a level of service that closely matches their operational needs without overcommitting to bundled solutions. This flexibility could make staying within the VMware ecosystem more appealing than migrating to alternative platforms, which often involves significant transition costs and complexity.
For businesses previously considering a switch, these reintroduced licenses may simplify cost and functionality alignment, reducing pressure to explore other platforms. However, they should still carefully evaluate their specific needs, as the virtualization landscape continues to evolve with competitive offerings from other providers.
